Shotgun Dive Site Komodo

Named for the exhilarating current that “shoots” us over a wall at thrilling speed, Shotgun Komodo delivers drift diving Komodo fans dream about: channel flow, mantas and sharks in the blue, and coral walls on both sides.

About This Dive Site

Shotgun: Where the Channel Turns Into a Ride

We dive Shotgun near Gili Lawa Darat, in a narrow passage between two islands. That geography matters: water stacks up and squeezes through the gap, so drift diving Komodo here feels focused and powerful instead of scattered. The Shotgun dive site Komodo is famous because the flow can carry you along steep walls coated in healthy hard and soft corals while pelagic life gathers in the open water.

Reef manta rays and sharks often cruise the nutrient-rich plumes, joined by trevallies, barracuda, and shimmering fusilier walls. When the current peaks, we feel the adrenaline together, yet the reef gives us reference points so the dive stays structured and visual from start to finish.

We include Shotgun on select schedules from our resort boats and talk through conditions honestly before we go. Plan your dives with our dive center crew, or ask how Shotgun fits a multi-day route on a Komodo liveaboard.

What To Expect

The Shotgun Komodo Dive Experience

We usually enter up-current of the channel, then let the water do the work. As we glide, we keep one eye on the wall for macro surprises and another on the blue for mantas, eagle rays, and sharks riding the same push of water we are on.

The heart of Shotgun is that burst of speed where the funnel is tightest, the moment that gave the site its name. It is a pure drift diving Komodo rush, but we stay shallow enough to stay in control, and our guides choose tide windows that balance excitement with safety.

Between pulses of current, we slow down over coral gardens where groupers, Napoleon wrasse, and turtles browse. By the end of the dive, most of us surface grinning, already comparing stories about how fast the water moved and who saw a manta first.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is drift diving Komodo like at Shotgun?

At Shotgun Komodo, we treat you to one of the park's most memorable drift dives. The channel funnels water between two islands, so we ride the flow along healthy coral walls while mantas, sharks, and schooling fish use the same nutrient-rich currents. It is fast when the tide peaks, and we love how alive the whole site feels.

How do we manage strong currents at the Shotgun dive site Komodo?

We plan every Shotgun dive around slack and manageable windows whenever possible. Before we enter, we brief line protocols, positioning, and signals so everyone knows how to stay shallow, stay together, and exit safely. Our guides lead at a pace that matches the group, and we never push anyone beyond what the day allows.

Why is Shotgun considered such a thrilling dive?

The name says it all: when the current really runs, it can feel like you are being "shot" along the wall at exhilarating speed. That adrenaline rush is part of the appeal, balanced by the spectacle of mantas and sharks in the blue and rainbow walls of coral on both sides of the channel.

What certification or experience do we need for Shotgun?

We recommend Advanced Open Water or equivalent and solid comfort in current. Prior drift diving experience helps because Shotgun is about reading the water, not fighting it. If you are unsure, talk to us at the dive center and we will suggest the right day and buddy group.

Can beginners dive Shotgun?

We generally reserve Shotgun Komodo for advanced divers because the flow can spike quickly in the channel. If you are still building confidence, we would rather show you gentler sites first, then welcome you back when you are ready for this level of drift diving Komodo.

How do we book a trip to Shotgun from the resort?

We run boat trips from Sebayur Island on roughly a 45 minute ride to this area near Gili Lawa Darat. You can line up dives through our team at the dive center, or fold Shotgun into a longer itinerary on a Komodo liveaboard when currents and routing align.
