About This Dive Site

Castle Rock: Where Sharks Rule the Current

Castle Rock is one of Komodo’s premier pelagic dive sites, a fully submerged pinnacle that never breaks the surface. Rising from deep open water in the Lintah Strait between Komodo and Gili Lawa, it sits in a prime position to receive the nutrient-laden currents that flow between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean.

These currents bring in huge concentrations of plankton that feed an extraordinary food chain. Schools of surgeonfish and fusiliers number in the thousands, creating shimmering walls of fish that attract predators from every direction. White-tip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, grey reef sharks make sweeping passes, and giant trevallies hunt aggressively through the baitfish.

For experienced divers who love pelagic action and the thrill of diving in current, Castle Rock consistently ranks as one of the most exciting dives in Komodo National Park. Our dive center runs regular trips here during optimal tidal windows.

What To Expect

The Castle Rock Dive Experience

After dropping into the blue, the pinnacle materializes from the depth like an underwater fortress. Your dive guide leads you to a sheltered position on the reef where you can take in the spectacle unfolding around you.

When the current is running, you can use a reef hook to secure yourself and watch the show. Schools of surgeonfish swirl in dense formations while trevallies dart through at speed. White-tip reef sharks glide past at arm’s length, entirely unfazed by divers.

On calmer days, you can explore the pinnacle’s slopes where healthy hard corals host groupers, sweetlips, and the occasional bumphead parrotfish. The top of the pinnacle at around 10 meters is a kaleidoscope of reef fish and makes for an excellent safety stop.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Castle Rock special for diving?

Castle Rock is a fully submerged pinnacle that rises from deep water, completely surrounded by open ocean. The nutrient-rich currents that sweep past attract dense concentrations of pelagic life including reef sharks, giant trevallies, and massive schools of surgeonfish that can number in the thousands.

How strong are the currents at Castle Rock?

Currents at Castle Rock range from moderate to strong depending on the tidal cycle. Our dive guides carefully time every dive to coincide with manageable current windows. When the current is running, you can hook onto the reef and watch the pelagic show unfold in front of you.

Can I see sharks at Castle Rock?

Castle Rock is one of the most reliable shark encounter sites in Komodo. White-tip reef sharks are almost guaranteed on every dive, and grey reef sharks make frequent appearances, especially when the current brings in cooler, nutrient-rich water from the deep.

What experience level do I need?

We recommend Advanced Open Water certification and prior drift diving experience. Divers should be comfortable with current management and reef hooks. Our guides always provide thorough briefings and match groups by experience level.

When is the best time to dive Castle Rock?

The dry season from April to November generally offers the best conditions with higher visibility and calmer seas. However, Castle Rock can deliver incredible dives year-round since the cooler waters during wet season often bring more shark activity.

Is Castle Rock near Crystal Rock?

Yes, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock are neighboring pinnacles separated by a short distance. Many of our dive trips visit both sites on the same day, allowing you to compare these two world-class locations back to back.
