KOMODO DRAGONS
Through the Komodo National Park tours you will discover the most remarkable inhabitant, the Komodo Lizard, (Varanus komodoensis), also known as “Komodo Dragon”, due to its appearance and aggressive behavior.
These giants existing no-where else in the world, are the largest living species of lizard, growing to an average length of 2 to 3 meters. Their population is restricted to the islands of Komodo (1,700), Rinca (1,300), Gili Motang (100), Gili Dasami (100), and Flores (c. 2,000), while extinct on Padar.
The Komodo National Park also provides refuge for other terrestrial species such as the Timor Deer, Water Buffalo, Wild Boar, Crab-eating Macaque, Asian Palm Civet, the Endemic Rinca rat (Rattus rintjanus), and Fruit bats. Domestic mammals include goats, cats and dogs which are feral.
Bird’s species are numerous such as the orange-footed scrub fowl, helmeted friarbird, white-bellied sea eagle, lesser sulpher crested cockatoo and many others.
MARINE LIFE
You can’t think of Komodo National Park tours without thinking of the underwater life. The coral reefs fringing the coast of Komodo are diverse and luxuriant due to the clear water, intense sunlight and rapid exchange of nutrient-rich water from deeper areas of the archipelago.
This is one of the richest and most diverse marine environments on earth and home to over 1000 species of tropical fish, 260 species of reef-building coral & 70 species of sponges, 18 species of dolphins, 14 species of whales, dugongs, as well as numerous species of sharks, manta rays and turtles.
The Komodo National Park was officially selected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2012.
