Castle Rock: Where Sharks Rule the Current
Castle Rock is one of Komodo’s premier pelagic dive sites, a fully submerged pinnacle that never breaks the surface. Rising from deep open water in the Lintah Strait between Komodo and Gili Lawa, it sits in a prime position to receive the nutrient-laden currents that flow between the Flores Sea and the Indian Ocean.
These currents bring in huge concentrations of plankton that feed an extraordinary food chain. Schools of surgeonfish and fusiliers number in the thousands, creating shimmering walls of fish that attract predators from every direction. White-tip reef sharks patrol the deeper sections, grey reef sharks make sweeping passes, and giant trevallies hunt aggressively through the baitfish.

What To Expect
The Castle Rock Dive Experience
After dropping into the blue, the pinnacle materializes from the depth like an underwater fortress. Your dive guide leads you to a sheltered position on the reef where you can take in the spectacle unfolding around you.
When the current is running, you can use a reef hook to secure yourself and watch the show. Schools of surgeonfish swirl in dense formations while trevallies dart through at speed. White-tip reef sharks glide past at arm’s length, entirely unfazed by divers.
On calmer days, you can explore the pinnacle’s slopes where healthy hard corals host groupers, sweetlips, and the occasional bumphead parrotfish. The top of the pinnacle at around 10 meters is a kaleidoscope of reef fish and makes for an excellent safety stop.
