Batu Bolong Dive Site

The crown jewel of Komodo diving, a tiny pinnacle erupting with an astonishing density of soft corals and marine life that few places on Earth can match.

About This Dive Site

Why Batu Bolong Is Komodo’s Most Famous Dive

Batu Bolong translates to “hollow rock” in Indonesian, named for the small hole that pierces through its exposed tip above the waterline. But it is what lies beneath that has earned this site its legendary reputation among divers worldwide.

This tiny pinnacle rises sharply from the deep ocean floor, creating an underwater mountain entirely carpeted in vibrant soft corals, gorgonian sea fans, and sponges. The nutrient-rich currents from the Flores Sea sweep past and around the rock, attracting an incredible concentration of marine life from reef sharks and giant trevallies to delicate nudibranchs.

Our dive guides consider Batu Bolong the single most biodiverse dive site in Komodo National Park. The coral coverage here is so dense and colorful that even experienced underwater photographers struggle to capture it all in one dive. We regularly include Batu Bolong in our daily dive trips and liveaboard itineraries.

What To Expect

The Batu Bolong Dive Experience

Your dive begins with a descent along the pinnacle wall where soft corals in every shade of purple, orange, and pink cover every surface. Schools of anthias dance around the coral heads while giant trevallies cruise past in hunting formations.

As you work your way around the rock, deeper sections reveal white-tip reef sharks resting on sandy ledges and Napoleon wrasse drifting past with their characteristic slow confidence. The shallower areas near the top are alive with thousands of damselfish and butterflyfish.

Our dive guides time every dive to coincide with the best tidal conditions. When the current is running gently, you can slowly circumnavigate the entire pinnacle. When it picks up, the drift brings even more pelagic visitors from the blue water.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Batu Bolong the best dive site in Komodo?

Batu Bolong is a small pinnacle that rises from deep water, creating a unique underwater mountain covered in an extraordinary density of soft corals, sea fans, and marine life. The nutrient-rich currents that sweep past the rock attract everything from tiny nudibranchs to reef sharks, making it the single most biodiverse dive in Komodo National Park.

What experience level do I need to dive Batu Bolong?

We recommend at least Advanced Open Water certification and some drift diving experience. The currents at Batu Bolong can change quickly, and divers need to be comfortable managing buoyancy near a reef wall. Our dive guides always brief the conditions thoroughly and time every dive to match the tidal window.

When is the best time to dive Batu Bolong?

Batu Bolong is diveable year-round, but April through November offers the best visibility (up to 30 meters) and calmer surface conditions. Even during the wet season, the site remains spectacular since the currents that reduce visibility also bring in more pelagic action.

How deep is the dive at Batu Bolong?

The pinnacle starts at about 5 meters below the surface and drops steeply to beyond 40 meters. Most dives stay between 10 and 25 meters where the coral coverage and fish density are at their peak. Your dive guide will plan the depth based on group experience and current conditions.

Can I see sharks at Batu Bolong?

Yes, white-tip reef sharks are common residents around the deeper sections of the pinnacle. Grey reef sharks also visit regularly, especially when the current is running. They are not aggressive toward divers and can often be observed resting on ledges or cruising along the wall.

How do I get to dive Batu Bolong?

Batu Bolong is approximately 45 minutes by boat from our resort on Sebayur Island. We run daily dive trips to this site when conditions are favorable. It is also a regular stop on our Komodo Sea Dragon and King Neptune liveaboard itineraries.
