Tatawa Besar Dive Site
A stunning drift dive along sloping reefs painted in soft corals, where green turtles rest on ledges, reef sharks cruise overhangs, and swim-throughs turn every profile into a little adventure.
About This Dive Site
Tatawa Besar Komodo: Long Reefs, Gentle Slopes, Big Rewards
West of Komodo Island, the Tatawa Besar dive site unfolds as a long, gently sloping reef that feels tailor-made for unhurried exploration. We drift over gardens of soft corals and gorgonian fans, pause at swim-throughs, and watch light ripple across bommies that seem to go on forever.
Because the topography stretches out, we can extend bottom times when conditions allow, giving you more time with turtles, schooling fish, and the small hunters that hide in the reef. It is one of the places where we can offer both a mellow glide for newer divers and a livelier drift for guests who want a bit more pace.
We include Tatawa Besar Komodo in many of our park rotations, about 35 minutes by boat from our base on Sebayur Island. Pair it with a stay in our bungalows, book through our dive center, or fold it into a liveaboard route for multi-day turtle diving Komodo highlights.

What To Expect
The Tatawa Besar Dive Experience
We usually enter up-current, let the reef unfurl beneath us, and ride a contour that alternates between open slope and pockets of structure. Anthias stack above coral heads, sweetlips hover in the shade, and Napoleon wrasse move through with unhurried confidence.
Green turtles and hawksbill turtles are regular characters here, often resting on ledges or peeling off into the blue. White-tip reef sharks patrol the deeper overhangs, while lionfish and scorpionfish remind us to fin carefully around the macro details.
When the current stays forgiving, we treat the site like a relaxed scenic highway. When it strengthens, we tighten the line, enjoy a faster drift, and still weave in swim-throughs that feel earned rather than rushed. Either way, we surface smiling and already talking about the next pass.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tatawa Besar suitable for beginner divers?
Yes. We love bringing newer divers to the Tatawa Besar dive site because the reef slopes gently and we can often run it as a relaxed, easy drift when the current is mild. Our guides match the profile to your comfort level, and we brief every group on buoyancy and drift technique before we enter the water.
What kind of drift diving can we expect at Tatawa Besar Komodo?
Tatawa Besar Komodo is famous for long, scenic drifts over soft coral gardens. On calmer tides the glide feels almost effortless, which is perfect if you are still building confidence. When the flow picks up, the same reef offers a more exciting ride for experienced divers who enjoy a faster drift with plenty to see along the way.
How good is turtle diving Komodo at this site?
We see green turtles and hawksbill turtles here on many of our dives. They rest on ledges, tuck under overhangs, or cruise the slope while reef sharks patrol nearby. If turtle diving Komodo is high on your list, we recommend moving calmly, giving them space, and letting our guides point out the best angles without crowding the animals.
Are swim-throughs safe for all certification levels?
The swim-throughs at Tatawa Besar add a sense of exploration without extreme overhead environments on most lines. We only guide swim-throughs when visibility and conditions allow, and we always confirm comfort levels first. If you prefer to stay in open water, we can still show you the same stunning reef from the outside.
When should we plan our Tatawa Besar dive for the calmest conditions?
We usually see the clearest water and friendlier surface conditions from April through November, which lines up with peak season across Komodo National Park. That said, we dive Tatawa Besar year-round when the sea state allows, and our team watches tides closely to pick the window that fits your group.
How do we book a trip to Tatawa Besar from Komodo Resort?
We run the Tatawa Besar dive site on many of our daily schedules from Sebayur Island, roughly 35 minutes by boat. You can join us through our dive center packages, add it to a longer itinerary, or combine resort nights with a liveaboard leg. Start with our rooms, dive center, or liveaboard pages and we will help you build the right mix.
